Blomqvist secures third podium finish of the season in Moscow

Tom Blomqvist notched his third podium finish of the 2016 DTM season this weekend as he claimed a P2 finish in the twelfth round of the Championship at the Moscow Raceway. Tom’s second-placed finish was part of a top-four lock-out for BMW in Moscow, the sixth time the German manufacturer have achieved this feat.

Blomqvist demonstrated great character to bounce back in Sunday’s race after a disappointing eleventh round the day before where he finished in P22 in the BMW Team RBM #31 car. Changeable weather conditions were an ever-present feature of this weekend’s racing in Moscow and they restricted Tom’s ability to challenge further up the grid on the Saturday.

Disappointed at the first race of the weekend, Tom felt that an uneventful race did not reflect the pace of the car.

“Not a lot actually happened for me in Saturday’s race. Unfortunately, I started at the back of the field – and that is more or less where I stayed. The car was actually better than the result would indicate, but I just couldn’t make any progress in the race. It was a very difficult one.”

The second race of the weekend proved to be a much more memorable one for Blomqvist. An excellent lap in qualifying saw him start Sunday’s race from the front row and he jostled with fellow BMW counterparts Marco Wittman, Bruno Spegler and Augusto Farfus for the top positions throughout the race. Eventually, Tom brought the #31 car home in second-place to mark an excellent day’s racing and the perfect response to Saturday’s disappointment.

Reflecting upon Sunday’s race, Tom was delighted with his third podium of the finish of the year but focussed his praise to the performance of the entire team.

“After the disappointment of Saturday, this was a fantastic result – not just for me, but above all for the team. I am delighted with my third podium finish of the season.”

Blomqvist’s P2 finish has seen him move up to sixth position in the DTM Championship Standings. At this point in the 2015 season, Tom had scored 10 championship points – one year on and Tom boasts an impressive tally of 71 points with his eyes firmly fixed towards the top of the Championship as the season progresses.

Next up for Tom, the DTM heads to the renowned Nürburgring circuit for the 13th and 14th rounds of the 2016 season. Round 13 gets underway on Saturday the 10th of September, while the 14th round follows the next day.
