The weekend found MB Partners' client Tom Blomqvist celebrating on the podium as he took a fantastic second place in the first race in Spielberg, Austria. Held at the famous Red Bull Ring, this was the third and fourth race of the DTM series, in which Tom drives for BMW Team RBM.
FP1 saw Blomqvist finish in first place, with similar success in FP2 and qualifying, as he took P2 on both occasions. With a favourable position on Saturday's grid, Tom got off to a flying start. Maintaining P2 throughout the entire race, he was even reported to be lapping quicker than Wittmann.
Pleased with his achievement, Blomqvist commented: “It is fantastic to be on the podium so early in the season. Our car has been incredibly fast so far this weekend. We ended up getting the result we deserved, and overall things went well for BMW too. I am happy - and naturally I will go on the attack again tomorrow.”
Sunday's racing gave Tom P6 in FP3. In qualifying, a drop to P10 was soon recovered as he found himself P8 by the chequered flag. For the main race, his impressive driving saw him gain places to P7. After all cars had pitted, Blomqvist was P6 - a position he held until the race's end.
After the second race, he commented: “From eighth on the grid, I moved up the field in the race - and that is always positive. It was really close again today, and on top of that it was hot. The car was good, but it is not easy to stay close to the car in front and overtake. At the end of the day, sixth place is totally fine. BMW really did have a superb weekend here.
The points gained from the weekend's race leave Tom sixth in the DTM Drivers' Championship, with 34 points. Blomqvist returns to the DTM from 3rd - 5th June as the series heads to the Eurospeedway Lausitzring, Germany.
